Not cool man.

Not cool at all. sigh. this is why I was afraid to write in, in the past, when stuff bugged me, sometimes you really don't want to know what someone REALLY thinks, but I just couldn't help myself this time man! I guess he'd been constructing that reply for a while huh, I didn't think the letter would get printed... Cos people always are 100% self-aware of what they are like, amirite 9__9 Cos if you KNEW you had some unexamined prejudice/privilege there wouldn't be such a scrambling to justify yourself when it reared its ugly head. I'm sure he has lots of black friends too! I dunno, its not really something that is easily explained you know? God, that reply reads like an argument with my little brother. *grumble* I tried, time to go drown my sorrows in Stargate Atlantis LOL its not a great show but the portrayal and treatment of female characters in it is really refreshing... and appreciated. :p Also, space vampires.

Sum doodels [Nov. 15th, 2009|01:47 am]

daleof

Its the weekend so I highly doubt that anyone is reading this. Oh well. You cant see the sideburn in the 2nd picture if you're wondering whats different.

Hey, I had great difficulty trying to colour this. Would you like to have a go? [info]jabberworks drawing of me in dublin influenced this a huge amount. (Oh and hey Sarah wasn't there a couple of sketches from that weekend that you haven't posted yet? I'd love to see that stuff)

Unsure of the colours in this. Was trying to emulate the colours of the original moleskine scan and then added some colours on top of that. (im in my last year of college in case you are wondering why I haven't posted in a while) Oh well, it's a nice drawing, I can always recolour it. Might use it for twitter or something. (I think the chair stands out too much)

[edit] Oh yeah, I drew the big one in the middle for [info]davario and his dude a day thing.

Saturday time wasters [Nov. 14th, 2009|05:02 pm]

meganleewelch
My weekend mission to scour the internet searching for the best places for you to waste your precious Saturday hours as you relish doing absolutely nothing productive.

(Pass along any sites you're convinced are totally awesome and I may feature them in future posts)

1. totallylookslike.com - You will be going through page after page after page...

2. zefrank.com - It's hard to explain exactly what zefrank.com IS....it's a whole bunch of things. All of which are guaranteed to waste away the hours.

I like the scribbler because it makes my chicken scratch writing and kindergarten level sketches look semi-artsy and cool.

3. cockeyed.com - I've had this one bookmarked for years. Just a bunch of silliness to entertain, such as: How much gold is inside Goldschlager?.

Several pages are thumbnailed at this point. I've had time to be creatively fueled again, so here again, is yet another page in what will in self-published book form be called Unicornography, rather than Random Junk & Shit Ideas.
The original title was such because I didn't expect it to go anywhere in the very beginning, it was just an excercise. I never thought it would go anywhere, but I'm enjoying making it.

I have caved [Nov. 14th, 2009|12:37 am]

finkenstein
The other day I had a thought. It went something like this:
"hhhm, I want to post about something but it's not really useful, kind of inane. It's not really livejournal worthy, probably better for Twitter."

So now I have a Twitter account. I'm not proud or anything, but what do you know? It's fun.

ANOTHER thing I just started doing is watching Star Trek generations! They started showing it on TV around 11 every weeknight so now [info]mrcolossal and I watch it every day.

I have to admitt, I have the same feelings about it that I had about Twitter! That it would suck and be boring, but what do you know? It's pretty awesome.

ANYWAY here is some fucking ridiculous Star Trek shit I have come across in my travels:

These are pretty cool, little model drawings of all the ship's rooms:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fadmvulcan/3101146589/in/set-72157611082099517/

LOOK AT THIS WEBSITE, this woman makes not only Trek paintings, but LABYRINTH TOO not to mention FIVE PAGES OF SNAPE ART!!!!
http://solarwindssciencefictionandfantasyart.com/pb/wp_ac94c8c5/wp_ac94c8c5.html?0.09796016018096487
My favorite:

I fucking hate Q and the Holodeck and love Picard like there is no fucking tomorrow.

So come follow me on my Twitter, where I will give 2 line reviews of every Trek episode I watch every hot fucking day! Watch as I descend into dorkatudes unknown.

The Fun of Doing Comics [Nov. 13th, 2009|06:14 pm]

smuu
Recently I've been stumbling around with the whole "how do I keep this drawing comics thing fun when it is my job?' thing. I know it sounds kind of weird, because drawing comics IS fun, but once the thing that you used to do "for fun" becomes the thing you do for work ... okay, it's not like it STOPS being fun, I LOVE doing it, but it becomes something ... else. I went to school for animation, and have worked in the animation industry for a few years, and all during that time I drew comics for fun. I always thought that drawing would be something hard to keep going with once I started pursing it as a career, but animation is different enough from comics so that wasn't a problem. I have an animation friend in Ontario who I like to meet up with and talk shop whenever I'm back there visiting and he works in animation to pay the bills, and does comics on the side. When I last saw him he was drawing storyboards for an animated show, and having a hard time working on his comics. He said it was difficult to find motivation to work on his comics while he was drawing storyboards because when you storyboard "you use the same part of your brain you use for comics. It's just too similar." I kind of know how he feels now.

I love doing comics, but when I take a few hours off on the weekend, and think about the things I want to do during my off time, and how oh gosh, it'd be nice to draw some comics for fun, the minute I think that some slightly exhausted person inside me shrieks (usually in a British accent, because I have a British interior monologue) "NNNNNNOOOOO you just did that for the past EIGHTY HOUUURRRRSS!" ... and that is why I end up dreamily staring at the TV for several hours on a Saturday without my sketchbook in hand, something Past Me would be horrified at, since previously I would never sit in front of the television without a sketchbook on which to sketch furiously.

Comics are so much fun. But they are also my work. But they're fun... I want to do more of them, but I've been drawing so many pages of them the thought of picking up my pencil and drawing another is a terrible drag, and shouldn't I be doing something fun during my downtime? Something fun like drawing comics?

... it's about this time that I attempt to turn off my British interior monologue, and retreat to watching reruns of Law & Order.

new picture book cover! [Nov. 13th, 2009|09:50 pm]

jabberworks
[Tags|]

This one isn't coming out til March 1st, but thought I'd give you a peek anyway! It features a princess, a space ship, chocolate, cakes and ALIENS!!! ...Ha ha, you'll never guess which things I had the most fun drawing.

Here's what Scholastic UK are saying about it on Amazon:
When King Cupcake is kidnapped by hungry aliens, it's up to his feisty daughter, Princess Spaghetti, to save him from becoming their dinner. She blasts off into space to show those naughty aliens who's boss - and introduces them to a delicious alternative to people: chocolate! This hilarious romp will delight chocolate lovers everywhere!

Gillian Rogerson's text IS funny, I had such a giggle when they showed it to me. And I probably gained ten pounds doing 'research' drawing the cakes, this book should come with a health warning.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Tomorrow! (Saturday) London, Roehampton University: IBBY Conference: Going Graphic: Comics and Graphic Novels for Young People, featuring speakers Paul Gravett, David Fickling, a panel with Emma Vieceli, John Dunning and me, moderated by Ariel Kahn; Marcia Williams, and Janet Evans speaking about Raymond Briggs. All day conference, and I hear Jim Medway is coming along, too!

Saturday, 21 Nov: Wigtown, the book town, southwest Scotland, Box of Frogs bookshop. Starting at 10:30am, I'll read Morris the Mankiest Monster and lead a 'Make your own Monster' workshop. Book sales and signing.

Saturday, 12 Dec: London, Wandsworth: Signing Morris the Mankiest Monster at The Golden Treasury bookshop from 3pm.

March 27 & 28: Inverness Highlands International Comic Expo (or 'Hi-Ex'). Talks and workshops with studio mate Gary Northfield. And Asia Alfasi says she's coming, too!

Thanks very much to all who've commissioned artwork! Those are rolling along now and should all be done soon.

Been spending a few minutes here and there behind the scenes on Knights of the Shroud. I've been adding character tags to each page and am about 40% done with that. And I've been tweaking upload dates and page titles so things display more coherently when the character tags are used, and I'm about 25% done with that. It isn't taking long. Like I said the other day, the interface at GirlAMatic makes it wicked easy (THANKS GAM CREW!), so I just chip away at it a few minutes at a time every now and then.

AND LIKE ALWAYS when I go back through things I itch so freaking bad to rewrite and redraw almost the entire thing. This is what happens when you are creative but don't have an editor who "gets it" to help you the first time around. And I've fixed that, too, behind the scenes, no names, but am not at a point where I can continue forward with new pages or redo the old ones with this person who is made of awesome. But I am very, very keen to get to that point. SO KEEN.

And I've had a major, major breakthough on this other awesome comic thing, on this fight which has had me stumped for ages. It has to be the awesomest fight scene I've done, because the project is the awesomest project for me right now, and the writer is the awesomest writer I've worked with and he totally deserves it. So things should get rolling along again, now.

Anyone else find that between penciling, inking, and coloring (toning, shading, whatever) there is some part of them which is different? I am learning that, just in my creativity, in the muscles of my arm and hand, the feeling of the creative flow is different for pencils than it is for inks, and different again for coloring. And I often find myself doing one page of pencils, then inking that page, then toning that page. And I seriously think my flow would be better, faster, and more fun if I just did all the pencils, then all the inks, then all tones, in stages like that. Or at least in big batches.

bkv interview [Nov. 13th, 2009|10:13 am]

found via The Beat...

Blog@Newsarama has an interview with Brian K. Vaughan, wherein he discusses The Escapists, leaving the TV show Lost, and his need to create new stories of his own:
http://blog.newsarama.com/2009/11/12/brian-k-vaughan-on-the-escapists-and-leaving-lost/

“I think when you get to the last page of the story, it was kind of a mission statement for where I wanted to go from here,” Vaughan explained, “which is that it’s perfectly fine to love the characters that we grow up with, and that there’s nothing wrong with keeping them alive and breathing new life into them but the real adventure for any creator is to sort of let go of the past and force yourself to create something new. So in a weird way, it would almost feel like a betrayal of the story and of the characters to go back to that rather than sort of letting their story being their story and for me to I think press on and hopefully keep creating more new things.” -- Brian K. Vaughan

There's a podcast available of the full interview but I haven't listened to it yet:
